POLITICAL SCIENTIST and York grad Leandro Vergara-Camus (PhD ’08) is one of four new professors to join the faculty of the Université de l’Ontario français, Ontario’s first French-language university, opening in Toronto in September.

An agrarian studies, social movements and sustainable development expert, Vergara-Camus has published extensively on land struggles, alternative development, agricultural policies and Latin American politics. His current research is on the global energy transition in the context of climate change.

“My PhD years in politics at York were pivotal for the development of a transdisciplinary and critical outlook on social issues – which I will bring to bear on my new position,” Vergara-Camus says. “It will be great to be back in Toronto and participate again in academic events on the York campus.”
